The goals of the Systemic Advocacy Unit are to:

  • promote social justice for people with disability;
  • promote the contribution and potential of people with disability;
  • bring about positive changes to those structures, policies and practices that exclude and discriminate against people with disability and put us at risk of abuse and neglect.

The Systemic Advocacy Unit undertakes its work in a variety of ways by way of external representation and lobbying to all levels of government and businesses. The Unit is also responsible for writing submissions to inquiries and formulating policy direction within the PWD organisation. Furthermore, the Systemic Advocacy Unit is responsible for conducting public forums around hot issues with a view to establishing strategic responses to particular issues.

Staff of the Unit represent on committees discussing such issues as

  • accessible transport,
  • people with disability living in boarding houses,
  • nutrition for people with disability,
  • sexuality,
  • occupational health and safety and
  • implications for people with disability as service consumers,
  • carers

and many other issues that impact directly on the lives of people with disability.
