 The Productivity Commission is the Australian Government's independent research and advisory body on a range of economic, social and environmental issues affecting the welfare of Australians. I'ts role is to help governments make better policies in the long term interest of the Australian community.

| Australia's Disability Support System |
|
 Four Corners - 15/02/2010: Breaking Point Reporter: Wendy Carlisle
Will Australia's flawed disability support system be reformed in time to save the families now at breaking point?
The heart-rending story that tells what it's like to live with a disability, or to care for someone who is disabled, in Australia today. Reporter Wendy Carlisle meets the families the nation has neglected.
The system of assistance for people with a disability in Australia is broken.
Carers know it, charitable organisations know it and so do the governments.
Now the federal government says something must be done. It's holding an Inquiry, with the intention of creating a new and fairer system. It's even considering a national disability insurance scheme. But will the system be reformed in time to save the families now at breaking point?

| National arts and disability strategy |
|
 The National Arts and Disability Strategy sets out a vision for improving access and participation in the artistic and cultural activities for people with disabilities. The Strategy provides a framework within which jurisdictions can assess and improve existing activities. It also identifies new priority projects that could be progressed as national initiatives or by individual jurisdictions.
The Strategy sets out eight underlying principles that will guide its implementation. These address issues such as the right for all Australians to have access to, and participate in, arts and cultural activities, and the need for people with a disability to be involved in the decisions that affect them.
Four priority areas for action are:
- Addressing barriers to access and participation;
- Supporting artistic and cultural practice amongst those with a disability;
- Developing audiences for disability arts companies and individual artists; and
- Improving policy development and planning within governments.

| Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (D.D.A.) |
|
 The Federal Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (D.D.A.) provides protection for everyone in Australia against discrimination based on disability. It encourages everyone to be involved in implementing the Act and to share in the overall benefits to the community and the economy that flow from participation by the widest range of people.
Disability discrimination happens when people with a disability are treated less fairly than people without a disability. Disability discrimination also occurs when people are treated less fairly because they are relatives, friends, carers, co-workers or associates of a person with a disability.
