Self Help and Support Groups for People with Mood Disorders

The Depression and Mood Disorders Association has a number of groups operating in the Sydney area. We are keen to start up new groups and have been having workshops to explore ideas about what kind of support is needed for people living with mood disorder and their families.

Self help and support groups are coordinated by volunteers. We do not receive any funding to run the groups so dates and times of meetings and contact people may change from time to time. The MHA NSW's Information Service has an up to date listing of current support group volunteers.

We do not have a particular viewpoint about the treatment of mood disorder. We believe that access to information and support enables people to make up their own minds about the kind of treatment, management or medication which is best for them.

The Philosophy of Self Help

  • we have no organisational hierarchy

  • we have a network of sharing, caring and fellowship

  • no one is in charge

  • there are no right or wrong answers: each person decides what works best for herself or himself

  • each meeting is autonomous with each group electing its own secretary or facilitator

  • and delegate to the DMDA management group,

  • we employ no "experts"

  • we simply share our stories of what mood disorder has done to our lives and what we are doing to recover our dignity and health

when we're up...

we feel good, ready to save the world, creative, zappy, sexy, bossy, we spend money extravagantly, are over generous and overtalkative. We stay up all night, stop eating, and race around until the whole thing gets spinning too fast and we might end up in hospital - crazy...

when we're down...

we feel tired and getting up in the morning is a tremendous effort. We have no self confidence, are not interested in sex and even simple tasks seem too difficult. We find it hard to concentrate and make decisions. Our attention slips. We feel a tremendous heavy sadness that never lifts: our face and body muscles may sag and we may look blank. Or we may be agitated, worried and anxious, unable to keep still.

We need other people but feel that we are a nuisance and that we have nothing to offer them anyway. We may feel anxious about the future and filled with despair - suicidal and hospitalised...

and when we're neither up nor down we're just like anyone else!
